10 job-hunt tactics you might not know Here are ten ways to find a job. Some will help when youre just starting, some will help you when youre stuck, and some will help you many times over. 1. Hire a cold caller. Cold calling to get a job really worksif youre good at it. Your ability to sell yourself on the phone shows exceptional sales skills, self-confidence, drive, and commitment. But most cold calls are executed poorly. Debra Feldman is a professional cold caller at Job Whiz; you hire her to get you a job, and she can do it. By cold calling CEOs. Whats the catch? She costs thousands of dollars. So consider teaching yourself the skill well enough to talk your way into a job where you can afford Feldman. 2. Use proactive recommendations. Instead of waiting for a hiring manager to ask for references, have your reference call immediately. This works well if you have a heavy-weight reference, like a well-known CEO or someone who knows the hiring manager. But it also works well if you have little professional experience. The good employers have relationships with professors and they forward students who seem exceptional, says Joel Spolsky, chief executive of Fog Creek Software and author of the blog Joel on Software. Also tap your coaches. They tend to know students well after meeting daily for practice over the course of a few years. A coach has extended knowledge of the students personalities, says Tom Carmean, head lacrosse coach at Amherst University, who has given many references to employers. 3. Stay organized with job hunt software. How many times have you put the wrong name on a cover letter? Forgotten where you applied? Forgotten what the job was? You need to be organized right off the bat maintain an Excel spreadsheet with all your contacts. For a serious job hunter who recognizes that a hunt never ends, you could try JibberJobber, which not only helps you organize your information, but can bug you about the things you should be doing but might not be, such as following-up with a phone call. 4. Turn a non-job into a job. Many companies use temp agencies as recruiting firms. Instead of going through the interview process, companies sift through temp workers until they find one they like. So when you find yourself temping at a company you like, give a star performance; even if the work doesnt require much skill, personality matters a lot in this sort of situation, so be fun and charming. And dont be shy about asking for full-time work. Note that this tactic will work for an internship as well. Matt Himler, a student at Amherst College, started out looking for an internship, and shifted his focus when he saw an actual job was a possibility. He now gets paid to blog for AOL Money Finance. 5. Use social networking sites. Some, like LinkedIn, are full of professionals who understand that a good job hunt is not an event but a way of life. Most of these people are good networkers and emphatic about making sure they are in a job they love; definitely the types you should be hanging out with, so sign up and create your own profile. Ninety percent of jobs posted at LinkedIn are associated with a profile, says Konstantin Guericke, co-founder of LinkedIn. So you can find a job you want, then find a way to connect with the hiring manager through people you know, and youll have a leg up on the competition because as if you havent heard this a thousand times most people get their job by networking. 6. Date someone with a network. Ubiquitous job hunting question: What if I dont have a good network? Match with someone who does and use theirs. Kay Luo works in corporate communications and has an extensive network that she just forked over to her boyfriend, a software engineer. His LinkedIn network: seven people, including Luo. Her network: More than 100. 7. Use U.S. mail. Youre probably not going to get past the automated resume scanner at a big corporation. Even qualified candidates dont get through. So dont even think about getting through if youre not a perfect match. Instead, circumvent the system with snail mail. Thats right. Go to Kinkos and buy some of that bonded resume paper that you always wondered who was using. Find the name of the hiring manager and send the letter directly to her. Chances are she receives 200 emails a day and one or two pieces of physical mail a day. So at least you know shell see what you sent. Chris Russell, who blogs at Secrets of the Job Hunt, says this tactic also works well at a small company where you can target the CEO. 8. Write a blog. Dont tell yourself that blogs are for kids. Theyre not. Theyre for professionals to get noticed. Himler, the Amherst student and AOL blogger, points out that blogging is very time-consuming, even for a college student. College students are really into MySpace and Facebook. Blogging hasnt taken off. But in five years my friends will go into a profession and they will want to get their name out there, and the best way to do that is with a blog. Himler fits in blogging with his full-time job of being a student and a lacrosse player, so consider that you might be able to tackle a blog as well. 9. Comment on blogs. Realistically, most people dont have the time or mental energy to maintain a blog. But you can target people you would like to work for and start commenting on their blog. Bloggers notice the people who regularly send great comments. This is a way to enter into a conversation with someone you want to notice you. This is a good tactic for not just hiring managers but also a person in your industry who is well-connected and could help you if he knew you. Michael Keleman, who blogs at Recruiting Animal, says that recruiters who blog regularly turn their commenters into job candidates. 10. Be nice. People who are perceived as nice get hired more frequently, says Robin Koval, co-author of The Power of Nice: How to Conquer the Business World with Kindness. But you probably already think youre nice. Most people do. If you get jobs easily, then chances are you probably are nice. Or so talented you can get away with being only moderately nice. But if your job hunting is strained, check out this test to see how nice you really are. The good news is that just taking the test could make you a little closer to getting that dream job; Harvard professor Tiziana Casciaro reports that just caring more about being nice will make you a little nicer.

Any job can be a good job if youre learning A few months after I graduated from college, I got a job at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. I thought it was the perfect job for me because I was very focused on playing professional beach volleyball, and I needed to earn money to get myself to Los Angeles, but I couldnt work 9-5 because then I wouldnt have enough time on the beach. My job at the Mercantile Exchange was 7am to 2pm. I got the job from a trader who wanted a volleyball partner. I worked for Prudential Bache running orders from the guys who took the orders on the phone, to the guys in the trading pit who held stacks of paper orders. These guys holding the stack kept track of orders (like, buy 30 lots of cattle when the price hits 15) and gave them to the traders when the price hit. Then the trader executed the trade. I tell you all this to tell you why I was so bad at the job. But first, heres why I was so good: Because I had no work clothes. I graduated from college and had a job as a bike messenger and played volleyball. So I had no money to buy a new wardrobe for the trading floor. I thought this was okay because the men (its almost all men) didnt even change their ties each day they left a tie hanging in their office and wore the same one every day. So I wore what can only be called beach cover-ups. And I thought the men thought they were dresses. Really, though, what the men thought is that I was available for sex. So, no surprise, I got a very good job in the trading pit almost immediately even though most people (read: men) had to work years before getting a job like that. My job was to keep track of what price people were paying for the British Pound. The problem is that Im dyslexic. I was never really sure about this, until I had this job. I was supposed to hold a bunch of orders to buy and sell British Pounds, and tell a broker when it was time to fill an order. But I could never figure out if the price was moving up or down. The numbers were just a big mess in my head. I know, you are thinking that this is very easy to figure out: Three comes after two, one comes before two. But you are probably not dyslexic. You, for example, know your right and left every time, which I cannot say for myself. So I wasnt very good at my job that summer, but you have to do something absolutely terrible to be a young twentysomething girl at the Mercantile Exchange and lose your job. When things got really bad, Id take a break and read Jane Eyre in the bathroom. The great thing about having so few female co-workers is no one noticed the long hours I spent in the largest stall. When the markets were slow, Id read a whole chapter. I just sort of continued this way, being such a wreck at work that I was taking longer and longer breaks with longer Victorian novels. But then the Berlin Wall fell. It is an understatement to say that this moment caused complete mayhem in the European currency markets. I was so checked out, from trying to keep track of the orders, and Jane Eyre, and my escape to Los Angeles, that I did not even know what happened. And I was screaming, Whats happening?!?!, but trading at the Mercantile Exchange is open outcry, and at that point, if you stopped to say anything youd miss a trade. I dont have a very clear memory of what happened. I remember my pile of orders falling on the floor. I remember the clerk next to me picking the orders off the floor and illegally making trades and no one seemed to care that he was filling orders he did not have the authority to fill. I remember that we had to estimate how many trades we missed and the trader I worked for started buying and selling generally hoping he would have the right number of buys and sells at the end of the day to be legal. I worry a little about writing about how much illegal activity was going on in the British Pound pit that day, but let me tell you something: That was a very tame pit. I am sure that people trading the German mark had it a lot worse. A lot of people lost all their money that day. A lot of people made so much that day the never had to work another day in their lives. I made so many errors that I lost my job. Which was everything I had. But you know what? It was a great job because I learned so much. I learned how sex appeal works at the office, I learned how people judge you by how you dress, I learned the importance of taking a break at work, and I learned that I was really, truly dyslexic. This is not even counting all the stuff I learned about commodities trading: I can use one hand to signal that the day traders are will screw you on price if you place an order now. So heres some advice for all you June grads who are worried about taking a job that is terrible: In almost any job youll learn a lot at the beginning if you keep your eyes open. Sometimes what we learn is not what we expect to learn, but all information about the world and ourselves is useful, if you put it to work when you make your next decision. So go out into the world with your eyes wide open. And this applies to everyone. You dont have to be young to demand personal growth from your job every day, and get it.

Lisa is an award-winning author, entertainment reporter, and film critic who has appeared on dozens of major news outlets and even Dr. Phil. Heres what she had to say about the new rules of job search for 2010 and beyond.1. Tell me a bit about yourself and what the inspiration for Career Comeback was. Its based on my own experience of successfully finding full time work in this economy, in my late 40s. Id been a multi-media journalist for more than 25 years and was freelancing, but found that most of the good positions were going to the young, nubile and experience-free. I live in Los Angeles, mind you, where no one even looks at you if youre over 23 and under 36DD. My new husband noted my frustration, and asked to see the resumes I was sending out. We decided that I needed a complete Career Makeover that would involve removing the age lines from my resume, rabid social networking, and branding myself to give a fr esh, hip, ageless impression. The new resume got immediate response (offers for interviews within 15 minutes of sending it out, I sold the self-promotional website I started within two months of launching it, and I received multiple full-time job offers. My efforts were so successful the Wall Street Journal decided to do a feature on me and my search strategy.   At that point my literary agent said, Write a book on thisyesterday! So I spent the next eight months researching, writing and interviewing and, voila! Career Comeback was born.2. What is Career Comeback about and who should be reading it?
